To truly be bored, is to be present in a way society doesn’t normally want us to be. Because we are left alone. No wonder I used to not be able to do anything solo without my AirPods, else I be left with my own wandering thoughts. The horror! 😏

But to your point, solitude can often be the thing that allows us to listen to ourselves unclouded by societal nudges. It’s one my favorite detachment exercises and ways to ensure my whole self has space to stretch.

I totally agree! I used to feel that same urge to constantly be listening to something as well (podcast or music). It’s still there but I’m glad I’m at least aware enough to make a choice now.

Yes! I've been intentionally leaving my headphones at home on my recent walks with Sable in the morning. It's amazing how many ideas and insights start to sprout when you just give them enough space to grow!

Yes!! Boredom is so powerful, and truly encourages creativity and innovation - of the desperate, pure heart and wide eyes sort 💛

Great post and makes me think of this Ezra Klein pod: (https://open.spotify.com/episode/5UcvTnLzxlcYdiSqYKbK24)

What stuck with me was that rest is not something that just happens, it has to be something you practice and put intention into. Easier said than done, but I've been trying to block off more Sundays and embrace boredom

Thank you, Brandon! I’ll check out that podcast, I appreciate the rec. 😁🙏

I’m totally with you, it’s a conscious choice. What I’m realizing is that the more aware you are of all the activities you do (much of which is on automatic mode) the more agency you have in deciding what to do with your time and energy. And then we have to unwind all of these belief systems to help inform those decisions.

I stopped spending >1hr on social media daily, that makes me so much more tolerant of boredom/unstructured time, because my mind is in less stimulation from the outside. Instead, brain brims with ideas.

When the outward "attacks" are less frequent, mind creates its own stories. Some are the negative thoughts that feed my anxiety (I'm still learning how to control them), but many more are the positive ones, ideas to share with the world.

nice work! It's not the easiest thing to do but so changes when you pull away from social media.

Yes, it's true that you'll get a combination of insights as well as distortions that come from trauma or external belief systems that you absorbed. But the latter gives you an opportunity to become aware, to feel it, process, and release. The more you get to do that, the more that intuition and deeper knowledge flows in.

Indeed, you phrase it smartly: a combination of insights and distortions
